Plug Share
PlugShare represents a cause-oriented spin on the sweeping trend of collaborative consumption by helping electric vehicle owners and enthusiasts create a network, both physical and social, to support and advocate for the popular adoption of electric vehicles. PlugShare allows iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners in the United States to share their outlets with one another. Members can choose to share 240v J1772 plugs (compatible with the latest generation of EVs, such as the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt) or standard 120v outlets. PlugShare also includes an up-to-date listing of public charging stations.
With over 12,000 users, PlugShare is now facilitating plug-sharing in 47 of 50 U.S. states. The network includes over 1,500 private outlets shared by PlugShare members as well as over 1,000 public charging stations. Of the private outlets, 65% of them are standard 120v outlets and 35% of them are 240v J1772 plugs. As evidenced by these numbers, the PlugShare network has quickly taken off to become one of the most timely and innovative platforms for addressing the lack of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
“We are thrilled to see this growing community forming around plug-sharing in the name of expanding grid accessibility and lessening our dependence on oil,” said Forrest North, founder and CEO of Xatori Inc. “In addition to its utility as a charging network, PlugShare is also a valuable communication platform for EV owners and enthusiasts. People are excited to connect with each other via PlugShare – it’s becoming a cause-based social network.”
